EQUIPMENT FOR HONG KONG TECHNICAL INSTITUTES
Mr Kershaw dincuored with Sir Michael Walker and myself this morning Me Royle's draft telegram to the Governor of Hong Kong about the nature of our offer to provide technicɛl equipment for those institutoo. The upshot is that Mr Kershaw decided that we should undertake to provide from the aid Programme equipment of up to £100,000 for each institute within a maximum of £400,000 total. He also decided that an appros of should be mado to industry to ask them to provide additional equipment, though this should not be communicated to the Hong Kong Government since if it failed the Hong Kong Government
It was might then come back and ask us to increase our offer. also agroed that there was no point in consulting industry until we had ootablished exactly what oquipment is required.
Perhaps you will proceed on thone lines. If the Hong Kong Government accept the offer we should get our Technical Education Adviser to agree with the Hong Kong Government on the list of equipment required on the basis of which we can then approach the British industry.
Perhaps you will let the DTI know of this decision.
