TEXTILE QUOTAS
I have expressed my regret that we have had to retain
quotas.
We only became aware of the size of potential imports in December (and could not have done earlier) Unless we had

acted very quickly the British market could be flooded with imports from abroad not from Hong Kong but from other places.

SECRETARY OF STATE'S PROGRAMME DURING HIS VISIT TO HONG KONG
I visited one of Hong Kong's modern textile factories in
the Colóny's complex industrial area.
2. I toured one of the Hong Kong Government's low-cost
housing estates and met and talked to some of the residents
there.
3. And I saw one of the Colony's oldest and most congested
resettlement estates and was shown the plans for its
conversion and modernisation.
MATTERS DISCUSSED WITH THE GOVERNOR AND HIS ADVISERS

Amongst the subjects covered by these discussions were
the import of textiles into this country, air traffic rights,
technical education and a number of other matters of general
interest.

5. The achievements of Hong Kong in the sphere of housing
