the New Territories which is held in common ownership under customary law. The Tong Manager has sole power of disposition of Tong land, and I felt greatly honoured. The land in aggregate is worth many millions of dollars, and since this appointment an unhappy series of disputes within these Tongs has come to an end.
The purpose of this letter is not to "blow my own trumpet', since my record is no better than, and not as good as, that of many other J.P. 'e, but to illustrate my participation in Statutory Boards and Councils, I need only refer to the list of official appointments. I am Chairman of the Appeal Tribunal established under the Buildings Ordinance to hear all appeals from decisions of the Building Authority, Chairman of the Investment Advisory Committee of the Sir David Trench Fund for Recreation, Chairman of the Investment Advisory Committees of the Police Children's Education Trust, and Police Education and Welfare Trust. I am still active on the Committee of the Hong Kong Law Society (past President). Through this latter appointment, I have held many long and arduous sessions as a member of the Working Party on Legal Education which has integrated the Law Faculty of the University of Hong Kong into the legal profession, with full recognition of the Hong Kong Law Degree and Post-Graduate Certificate for the purposes of qualification.
Finally, I would make the point that the J.P. contribution has been less effective in recent years than formerly, and this I feel is due to the lack of
