You wrote on 29 April to Donis Greerhill (who at the moment is with the Prime Minister in Paris) about the possibility of a member of Ne visiting Hong Kong on the occasion of the opening of the Science Centre of the Chinose University.
2.
The Secretary of State himself would be glad to visit Hong Kong (hô had been independently thinking about a visit there next year) and to take part in the opening of the Centre while he was thoro provided always of course that the dates can be fitted in vith his other commitments both hero and elsewhere at that tiro.

in this connection we had heard from the Secretary of the Inter. University Council for Higher Education Oversees that the opening of the Science Contre had been fixed for 6 April and that this would bo the day imrodiately prceeding the opening of the Conference of Vice-Chancellors otic. Thet particular dete would not in fact be very convenient for the Secretary of State. He would profer rot to have to leave here until about 10 April 2.c. arriving in Hong Kong on 11 April for a programme, starting on 12 April 26 the earlicet. Your letter however succesta that retters might not yet have beer fized so precisely as tho Secretory of the IUC hnd led us to suppose. Could you sound out the University Authorities confidentially
C to the possibility of arranging matters this way. such en arrangenent, if the oponing of the Scienco Centre were put back accordingly, the Secretary of State could perhaps look in on the Conference in its cloring atagos?

The other potential commitment of the Secretary of State at this tiho do the SEATO Feoting. foxt your this is to ho held in Canberra ard it normally takes placo in April. The Australians have not yet told us what date they have in mind but if we had dates for the Secretary of State's visit to Hong Kong we would probably be able to influence them to choose a time which would allow the Secretary of State to go on from Hong Kong to Australie
