HONG KONG MASS TRANSIT FURTHER STUDIES: FINAL REPORT
SUMMARY OF CONSULTANTS' RECOMMENDATIONS
INTRODUCTION
1.
The Consultants recommend that the underground railway system most suitable for the estimated traffic in 1986 (the Design Year) is the system shown in Figures 1.1 & 3.6 of Volume I of the Report. The system is described as the Preferred System and comprises 48 stations and a total route length of 32.7 miles, to be developed in nine distinct stages. The first four of these stages constitute what is described as the Initial System. Copies of route maps showing both the Preferred and the Initial Systems are at Appendices 1 and 2.
THE PREFERRED SYSTEM
2.
(a)
This System consists of the following lines:-
The Kong Kow Line : this will run from the Central District on Hong Kong Island through a tunnel under the harbour and the nce under Nathan Road to a large station at Mongkok. There the line divides into two branches.
(b) One of these is the Tsuen Wan Branch Line, which will run from Mongkok via Shamshuipo, Lai Chi Kok and Kwai Chung to Tsuen Wan West.
(c)
The other is the Kwun Tong Branch Line, which is designed to run from Mongkok via Shek Kip Mei, Wong Tai Sin and Kwun Tong to Ma Yau Tong.
(a) The East Kowloon Line is designed to run from Diamond
(e)
Hill via Kai Tak to Tsimshatsui and cross the harbour through a tunnel to terminate at Western Market. (This eliminates the need for a second line under Nathan Road.)
The Island Line, which will extend from Kennedy Town along the whole of the waterfront of Hong Kong Island, will link with the Kong Kow Line at Central and with the East Kowloon line at Western Market.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE SYSTEM
3.
The system would be developed in nine distinct stages. Construction could be stopped at the completion of any stage after the second and still leave a fully operational system. A shortened system of this kind would be operationally viable and would provide the optimum service over its reduced length for the largest possible number of people. The first two stage s would comprise the whole of the Kong Kow Line and the majority of the Kwun Tong Branch as far as Kowloon Bay. They would be scheduled for completion by the end of 1976 and would represent
