During the course of the further studies the Consultants were in constant touch with the Government departments concerned principally the Public Works Department and the Transport Department and took advice from the Steering Committee under the chairmanship of the Deputy Ecchemic Secretary. This was to ensure that all reasonable route alternatives were examined and that full account was taken of local conditions particularly in relation to route location, planning and land development con-iderations and the provision of a system located and equipped to a standard compatible in every way with Hong

Kong's circumstances.

SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS

In the Report the Consultants recommend that the system most suitable for the estimated traffic in 1986 (the Design Year) is the system shown in Figure 1.1 of the Report. It comprises 47 stations and a total route length of 32.7 miles. This is described as the Preferred System and consists of the following lines or branch lines:-

(a) The Kong Kow Line: this will run from the Central District

on Hong Kong Island through a tunnel under the harbour and thence under Nathan Road to a large subway station at Mongkok. There the line divides into two branches.

(b) One of these is the Tsuen Wan Brich Line which will run

from Mongkok via Shamshuipo, Lai Chi Kok and Kwai Chung

to Tsuen Wan West.

(c) The other branch line is the Kwun Tong Branch Line

which is designed ultimately to run from Mongkok via Shek Kip Mei, Wong Tai Sin and Kwun Tong to Ma Yau Tong.

(d) The East Kowloon Line extending from Diamond Hill via

Kai Tak to Tɛimshatsui and crossing the harbour in tunnel to terminate at Western Market. (This eliminates the

need for a second line under Nathan Road.)

(e) The Island Line which will extend from Kennedy Town

along the whole of the waterfront of Hong Kong Island linking with the Kong Kow Line at Central and with the

East Kowloon line at Western Market.

THE COST OF THE PREFERRED SYSTEM

The estimated cost c the whole of the Preferred System at

mid-1970 prices is HK$4,391 million.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE SYSTEM

7.

The subway system would be developed in nine distinct stages. Construction could be stopped at the completion of any stage after the second and still leave a fully operational system. A shortened
