the future adaptability of the system to meet increases in the desire to travel resulting from Hong Kong becoming a more affluent society;

air-conditioning the system;

the preference for a termini system over a loop system with a tunnel at Lei Yue Mun;

obstructions to traffic caused by the system's construction work;

social aspects of noise resulting from night construction work on the system;

safety measures on platforms;

prevention of flooding of stations during typhoons and rain storms; and

enforcement of the system's by-laws.

Mr. Szeto said some members of his Committee favoured the system

being air-conditioned from the start of its operations.

One member had expressed concern that provision of open spaces

had not been made in the proposal at all stations for the construction of

bus termini at a later date if they proved to be necessary.

Another member would only recommend acceptance of the proposed

system conditional upon it being air-conditioned from the start, in view of

Hong Kong's climate, instead of it being air-conditioned at a later date if

it proved to be necessary.
