MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM

when it

come back

Recommendation By Transport Advisory Committee

**

En.

23,

The Transport Advisory Committee has recommended to the Governor

that the Mass Transit System is both necessary and adequate for Hong Kong's

future transport needs.

This was stated today by the Chairman of the Transport Advisory

Committee, Mr. Szeto Wai. The System was proposed by the Government's

Consultants in their Further Studies Final Report.

Mr. Szeto, however, emphasized that the Committee's recommendation

was made only from the transport and traffic point of view. He said:

"There are other considerations, such as the system's tremendous costs

and claims on Hong Kong's financial resources of other equally important

projects."

Mr. Szeto said a representative of the consultants attended a

special committee of the Transport Advisory Committee and satisfactorily

answered queries by members of the committee on certain aspects of the

underground railway scheme.

These are:

**

the necessity of having two tunnels across the harbour from Tsim Sha Tsui instead of one;

the adaptability of the system should the 1971 census show considerable differences in the Colony's present and projected populations;
