It is estimated that the housing programmes by the Government and

the Housing Authority will provide homes for 683,000 more in the six-year

period ending 1975.

In January 1971, the number of applications on the combined waiting list for the Housing Authority and government low-cost accommodation stood

at 163,767. Of these, 48,000 were investigated. Up to December 31 last

year, more than 24,000 had been allocated flats.

The Housing Authority is a statutory body set up in 1954 to provide,

manage and maintain suitable housing and amenities for people living in overcrowded or otherwise unsatisfactory conditions and unable to pay the

rent for comparable accommodation in the open market.

It consists of all members of the Urban Council, the Commissioner

for Housing, and no more than three persons nominated by the Governor.

The first estate in North Point was completed in 1958, providing 1,955

flats for 12,264.

At present, there are nine estates

in Kowloon and one in the New Territories

three on the Island, five

providing 34,900 domestic

flats, 318 shops, 13 primary schools, 29 kindergartens, 138 market stalls

and, in some estates, multi-storey garages.
