BUILDING PROGRAMME OF HOUSING AUTHORITY

Accommodation For Hundreds Of Thousands

The recent completion of the Ping Shek estate

one of the

largest estates in Kowloon

marks another milestone in the short history

of the Housing Authority.

In 17 years since 1954, the Authority has built nine estates

housing more than 218,000 in the low and middle income groups.

Financed mainly by government loans in the first 10 years, the

Authority has since become increasingly self-supporting, but the tempo of

its programmes has been maintained.

Its 10th estate, the Oi Man, housing 46,000, is under construction,

and an 11th estate in Clear Water Bay Road is on the planning board.

The Authority also manages for the Government 10 completed and

two partly-completed low-cost housing estates accommodating another 188,000.

The Government's low-cost housing and resettlement programme has

so far housed more than 1.4 million. This will be further boosted this

year with expenditure of more than $110 million

cost housing, and $47.1 million for resettlement.
