I am writing to thank you and Mr. Michael Laird for the courtesies extended to me during my recent visit to London which, as you know, was mainly devoted to the search for a suitable man to be the first Director of the new Hong Kong Polytechnic.

I was indeed grateful for the opportunity to exchange views on so wide a range of topics of interest and concern to Hong Kong and I cannot express how reassuring it was for me to learn how deep and genuine is London's concern for our welfare and progress.

As I mentioned during our meeting, we have had applications for the Polytechnic Director's post from countries outside the United Kingdom and Common- wealth. We are nevertheless confining our recruitment efforts to Britain because we are convinced that it is in our mutual interests that the institution, including its staffing, organisational structure and curricula, be modelled on British lines. We hope to announce the appointment by the middle of June of one of two principal contenders for this post, both of whom are British.
