1. We understand that Mr Canning the Director of Education in Hong Kong is anxious to start a library at the Polytechnic and has enquired whether Her Majesty's Government could help in this.
2. I appreciate that to provide a complete library would be an expensive undertaking but it may be possible to start the Polytechnic off with a nucleus of books to the value of a few thousand pounds.
3. This proposal seems an excellent one and has our full support and I should be grateful if you could look into the possibility of assisting the Hong Kong Polytechnic with a nucleus of books for their library. You may possibly have some scheme under which this assistance could be provided, and if this is so, I should be grateful for details to enable us to write to Mr Canning about his request.
4.
I am sending a copy of this letter to Mr Wootton in Universities and Technical Education Department.
