SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION FACILITIES FOR COUNCIL MEETINGS

New System Expected To Be Fully Operational By Mid-1972

83

Simultaneous interpretation facilities for Council meetings are

expected to be fully operational by the middle of 1972, the Colonial

Secretary, the Hon. Sir Hugh Norman-Walker, said in the Legislative Council

this (Wednesday) afternoon.

In a reply to the Hon. Q.W. Lee, Sir Hugh stressed, however, that

much remained to be done before simultaneous facilities could become available.

"I hope that the necessary interpreters will be recruited and the

essential electrical equipment purchased in the near future.

"Without being able to give a definite date, I hope that the new

system will be operational by mid-1972."

Mr. Q.W. Lee had asked that the Legislative Council be informed of

the extent to which the recommendations, particularly in the second report,

of the Chinese Language Committee had been accepted by the Government and how

soon they would be implemented.

The Colonial Secretary replied that the First Report, dealing with

the use of Chinese at meetings of the Legislative and Urban Councils and

Government boards and meetings, was accepted by the Governor in Council in

May this year.
