Briefing for Mr. Bottomley's Visit to Hong Kong
The situation is as follows :
A. COMMODITIES DEPT
No brief is being prepared as Mr. Bottomley has been able to acquaint himself with the textile scene.
B. EXPORT PROMOTION DEPT
I spoke with Gray and ,briefly, to Willson. DTI are handling things for them as far as Hong Kong is concerned.
C. DEPT. OF TRADE & INDUSTRY
Ken rice said that CRE are doing the following
briefs:
a
Hong Kong Economy
b
Hong Kong-U.K. Trade Summary
Trade Commission & the B.N.E.C.
EEC Textiles and Generalised preferences.
He emphasized that (with the exception of c) all these would be short, particulary the last. The paper on the Trade Commission he said would be of interest to you, as it will brief Mr. Bottomley on the allegations of the Trade Commission that the Hong Kong Government is indifferent to British trade interests.
