"But the big problem we are facing is that many families now living

in overcrowded and very old estates are reluctant, for reasons of their own,

to move,"

a department spokosman said today.

"Among the reasons given aro the flats offered in new ostates aro

located too high up, operating a hawking business nearby and a move to another

estato would be bad for business, reluctance to lose a good neighbour, difficulties

for children attending school, and suporstition, such as being advised by tho

gods not to move."

About 1,100,000 are being provided with homes in 23 resettlement estates

Of these, 540,280, or

in Kowloon, on the Island and in the Now Territorios.

about half, are housed in the old Mark I and II-type ostatos, and 539,800

havo living space in the newer Mark III, IV and V estates.

More estates are being built or planned, and domestic flats for an

estimated 237,150 should be ready before 1974.

Some of the estates being built aro Mark VI, an improved type providing

35 square foot of space for each occupant.

All the nower Mark III, IV, V and VI estates provide additional

amenities such as open recreational space, playgrounds, schools, kindergartens,

markets, restaurants and welfare centres.

The 16-storey domostic blocks have lifts, and each flat has its own

water supply.
