BIGGER FLATS FOR RESETTLED FAMILES

Reasons Why Many Profer Not To Move

*******

Families living in old rosettlement estates built 12 to 15 years ago

are being offered larger and better accommodation in developing estates.

This year, the Rosettlement Department set aside for this purposo

accommodation for 30,000 pooplo, an increase of 10,000 over previous years, and

notices are postod from time to time in all old estates inviting residents to

apply for the newer type of accommodation.

A "decantation" programme was first bogun in 1961 along with plans to

stop up the construction of more and bettor estates throughout Hong Kong.

In 1965, a special decantation unit was set up within the department,

and residents of all the old estates, such as Shek Kip Mci, Li Cheng Uk and

Wong Tai Sin, living at high densities, were offered bettor accommodation in

now ostates.

In the past three years, more than 9,100 families numbering 60,000 people, have accepted the department's offer of better homes, enabling

about 70,000 residents of old estates to share the additional space made available

by the decantation.
