Will you please refer to Sir David Trench's letter to Wilford of 25 August on the subject of copyright in broad- casts.
During his visit to Hong Kong last month Wilford spoke to Denys Roberts about this matter and handed him a copy of a letter (with one of its enclosures) which he had received from R. F. G. Dennis, a Director of Rediffusion International Ltd. I attach copies of the correspondence in question.
You will see that the enclosure to Dennis' letter i the draft of an undertaking which Rediffusion would be prepared to offer to the Hong Kong Government in exchange for the latter's abandoning the features in the proposed copyright legislation to which the Company have taken exception.
Denys Roberts' first reaction was that the idea of the proposed undertaking might well be helpful and he undertook to have a look at it and let us know his views. We have not yet heard from him on the subject and I
thought it as well to send you this further copy of the undertakings and to enquire whether you think that it holds out any hope of helping to resolve this extremely intransigent problem.
