As the result
of its decision to withdraw British forces from the Far East by the end of 1971, the previous Administration had also decided to increase the Army element of the garrison to 7/ major units · at that time, since it would no longer have been possible to reinforce the garrison in time of need from forces within the
3
Far Eastern Theatre. However, although
no official decision has yet been taken,
it now appears virtually certain that
the army element in the post 1971 garrison
will remain at its present strength of 6/3 major units. The Gruan in thü

3. The following is a similar comparison
between the present and the post 1971
strengths of those elements of the
garrison which are required for internal
security and related purposes (and
which are therefore taken into account
in assessing the size of Hong Kong's
contribution towards the cost of the
garrison)
