The one regret which a citizen of the United Kingdom can have about this boom is that although United Kingdom exports to Hong Kong are in fact increasing at the rate of about 12% per annum, the proportion of the Hong Kong market supplied by the United Kingdom is gradually decreasing. is now only about 9%.

Part of the trouble in the past has been a tendency by British businessmen to take the Hong Kong market for granted. Although Hong Kong is a British Crown Colony, it is a great mistake to assume that its inhabitants are necessarily going to buy British. This is not a "chasse gardée". There is much goodwill towards Britain but this is a classic example of a free enterprise economy and competition reigns supreme. British goods have to compete on equal terms with those of any other country and prive, quality, delivery dates especially delivery dates - are all important for

obtaining orders.

However, there are signs that the tide is turning for United Kingdom exports to Hong Kong and that United Kingdom businessmen are beginning to take this market seriously. Indeed, a market of some four million, increasingly sophisticated, customers with a rapidly increasing standard of living (a market, moreover, with a population greater than that of some 50 independent states) deserves to be

taken seriously.
