Regarding the pensions of judges I attach certain files relevant to the Judges' Pensions Arrangements for the West Indies and in particular draw your attention to No. 8 on SA 82/333/01.195 also attach a copy of the T.W.I. Judges Pensions Law showing how pensions were applied in that area. If, as it was done in the West Indies, the more beneficial pension arrangements were applicable to all judges and not solely to those who were elevated from the local Bar then there should be no difficulty as between one judge and another. The essential point about this is that overall the colonial service judge is treated no less favourably than the local Bar judge although the latter by virtue of the arrangement giving greater value to short service means that both judges will reach the maximum pension regardless of the disparity between their relevant length of service. I have not at this stage provided details of the special pensions arrangements for judges elsewhere, for example in Ghana, since they do not in real terms offer satisfactory alternatives.
I hope that this information, limited as it is, will be of sufficient immediate value to you; if however you would like us to undertake further researches or to supply additional material please let me know.
