Would you please refer to your letter of 12 June, in which you asked for advice on several matters relating to the grant of the title "Royal" to the Hong Kong Police Force and the Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force, and the appointment of Princess Alexandra as Honorary Commandant-General of both forces.

We have consulted Princess Alexandra's Household, the Lord Chamberlain's Office and the Home Office on the points you raised, and I am setting out below guidance on your queries in the order in which you put them,

1.

2.

3.

4.

Neither the Royal Hong Kong Police Force nor the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force are required to provide Equerries for Her Royal Highness.

No changes are required in the flags, banners and standards of the Forces.

We understand that Princess Alexandra would be pleased to receive a copy of the Annual Report. This should be sent to The Lady-in-Waiting, Lady Mary Fitzalan-Howard, at Kensington Palace.

I have been advised by the Lord Chamberlain's Office that if the Hong Kong Police Sports Association or the Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Club wish to incorporate the word "Royal" in their titles, the proposed titles will have to be submitted for The Queen's approval. The proposals should be sent to this Office by the Governor, and with the Governor's approval.

Similar action would have to be taken in respect of the Hong Kong Police Association, although, as the Association is registered in the United Kingdom, the proposal would be considered by the Home Office.

One course that these bodies might wish to consider would be for them to retain their present titles, but to mention on their note paper, etc., that they are associ- ated in whatever way with the Royal Hong Kong Police Force or the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force as appropriate. I am sure that there would be no objection to this at our end.

I hope the above information is of help to you.
