Police Training School

This is where every Probationary Inspector will spend the first nine months of his career. He will undergo six months intensive police training and also a three month full-time course in Cantonese.

The school, which has been completely rebuilt, lies in a valley at Aberdeen, on the south side of Hong Kong island and about nine miles from the centre of Victoria.

There are buses to town at 7d and the journey takes about 30 minutes. Taxi fare for the trip is about 6s. 3d. each way.

There are few recreational facilities at the school, but there are several bathing beaches. which can be reached by bus. The nearest of these is at Deep Water Bay.

Aberdeen is one of the Colony's main fishing centres, and the home of thousands of boat dwellers. Many tourists are attracted

there for a meal on one of the floating restaur- ants anchored in the harbour.

Despite free evenings and weekends, how- ever, most newcomers will have little time for outside attractions. Training is intensive and every day brings a full quota of drill and lectures.

The Cantonese course is undertaken either immediately before or after the Police training course. It is held at the Government Language School in Victoria, and classes travel there daily from the Police Training School.

Each class at PTS is made up of roughly equal numbers of Chinese and European Probationary Inspectors.

Their day starts at 7 a.m. with half an hour of physical training. Breakfast is at 7.45. After morning parade at 8.45 there are three one-hour periods devoted to drill, weapon training, lectures or practical demon- strations.
