Alan Michael ELLIS

Alan Michael ELLIS was born in Wood Green, London,
W.22, Middlesex, England on 15th December, 1941, and last held
British passport No.485065 issued on 20th July, 1966. He
joined the Hong Kong Police Force on 19th January, 1962 but
his service was terminated on 22nd July, 1963 on the grounds
that he was unlikely to become an efficient police officer.
He then first obtained employment with the Hong Kong Standard
and later, on a free-lance basis, with Radio Hong Kong. On 4th
September, 1964, he was involved in a traffic accident whilst
driving a goods van belonging to the Sing Tao Jih Pao in the
New Territories in which two persons were killed. He was not
prosecuted due to insufficient evidence. He left the Colony on
15th September, 1964 for Australia. Ellis returned to Hong
Kong in 1965 and worked for "Circle Four Associates" 94, Nathan
Road, a publishing concern, which produces the magazine "What's
on in Hong Kong". Since leaving the Police Force, Ellis has
become a critic of Government generally and of the Police in
particular.

In 1965, Ellis became friendly with Mrs. Elliott,
obtaining employment at her school, joining the U.N.A.H.K. and
subsequently becoming Secretary of the L.A.C. In March, 1966
he resigned as Secretary of the L.A.C. due to a difference of
opinion with MA Man Fai but remained an active member of the
L.A.C. During the Commission of Enquiry into the 1966 riots
he obtained evidence on behalf of Mrs. Elliott concerning the
Police Force to use to embarrass and discredit the Commissioner
of Police when he gave evidence. This information was passed
by Mrs. Elliott to her solicitor Mr. Brian Tisdall. Ellis at
this time cultivated the friendship of certain junior police
officers, to obtain information. In mid-1966 Ellis was in con-
tact with Mr. A.G. Hardy, an Inspector of Police who had been
