TRENCH IS GONE, YET THE BLOOD DEBTS CANNOT
BE REPUDIATED
Trench is gone. After having caused great
disasters and having had his hands stained with the blood of the Chinese people, he makes an awkward departure. Recently, the propaganda machine of the Hong Kong Government tried to give a false outlook of stability by telling such lies as 'Hong Kong is still as prosperous and stable as ever' The Hong Kong Trade Development Council used such empty talk to attract more business from abroad. Responsible persons of a few royal commercial organisations of the Hong Kong British, who recently made statements in newspapers, dared to bluff by saying that 'outflowing capital has returned, productivity is making a great leap forward, trade is flourishing and the market is good'. Besides cheating themselves, they cheated others by saying that 'everything has returned to normal!. Officers of the Commonwealth Relations' Office in London also joined in the chorus by saying that 'the situation in Hong Kong is now under control!'
They are, in fact, making a dream out of reality. They put on a false show of stability, but nobody is fooled. And the show could not even hide the embarrassing position of Trench when he fled.
Ever since Trench created a series of
sanguinary incidents, Hong Kong has been suffering blows in the political and economic fields. The Hong Kong British are really having a hard time. The market is quiet and those who have money leave Hong Kong with their capital. The foreign officers, foreigners, running dogs, slaves and those who have to rely on the U.S. and British Imperialists become restless and uneasy. Real estate investment, one of the big pillars that upholds the economy of Hong Kong, is at a stand-still. Business of Department stores and shops dealing in consumer goods dropped tremendously and the business of the stock market is almost inactive.
Under the circumstances, the Hong Kong British can squeeze less money out of the people. In order to keep up the white terror, the Government has to use a lot of men and money. This upsets the budget. The joint strike of workers of Government Departments and British-run enterprises has been going on for more than ten days and it is becoming more and more effective. Despite Trench's efforts to minimise the effects of the strike, it has turned Hong Kong upside down and Trench knows it. A general strike starts today. The twenty
/struggle......
