AIRCRAFT FOR HONG KONG
1. Following your meeting 1 on 22nd July 1969, the Secretary of State approved (2) your outline proposals (3) for visits by RAF aircraft to Hong Kong post-1971 from squadrons taking part in training in the Far East as an alternative to the permanent stationing of fighter aircraft in the Colony. These proposals have since been put to the Governor by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and a final reply is awaited. The Secretary of State also noted (3) your decision (1) that the Air Force Department should undertake a further study to determine how an RAF combat presence could be provided in Hong Kong between March 1970, when the FEAF Hunter squadron is due to be withdrawn, and the first post-1971 training detachments in the Far East, in other words during a gap of about two years.
