SURVEY OF 1,800 TEXTILE FIRMS
Likely Effects Of British Decision To Imposo Tariffs
The Director of Commorco and Industry, Mr. T.D. Sorby, announcod
today a comprehensivo survey of approximately 1,800 firms involved in tho
oxport of cotton textiles to Britain had begun.
Tho aim is to assoss the likely offects for Hong Kong of tho
British Govorrmont's decision to imposo a tariff on imports of cotton
toxtiles from Commonwealth suppliors with offoct from the beginning of 1972.
Mr. Sorby rocallod that in August, a special committoo of tho
Taxtilos Advisory Board was sot up to assess tho likely affects on Hong
Kong's oxports of cotton toxtiles to Britain of tho proposals made in tho
Prosidont of tho Board of Trado's statomont in Parliament on July 22, 1969,
on tho U.K. Textile Council's roport.
Tho Committoo was also to report its conclusions and rocommondations
to tho Textiles Advisory Board, who so mombors, including co-optod mambors
not on the Toxtilos Advisory Board, aro Sir Sik-nin Chau, Mr. S.S. Gordon,
Mr. R.P. Parcall, Mr. K.S. Lam, Mr. Francis Y.H. Tion, Mr. Y.L. Yang,
Mr. Y.C. Choong, Mr. C.K. Chow, Mr. David Z.D. Woo, Mr. T.K. Ann, Mr. Jamos
M.H. Wu, Mr. W.T. Lai and Mr. Vincent Woo.
