I should like to put on record that according to paragraph 8 of the liong Kong record of the negotiations, in Stockholm on the 16th-18th June, the leader of the Hong Kong Delegation suggested to the Swedes that they should impose restrictions on imports of knitted nylon shirts from Portugal. The leader of the Swedish. Delegation replied that consultations would be hold with Fortugal on synthetic shirts.
2*
This is a serious matter for us because we are under heavy pressure to impose restrictions on imports of knitted nylon shirts from Portugal. Moreover, we appear to be in a curious constitutional position where a dependent territory is telling one of our ENIA partners to impose restrictions on imports from another partner for her benefit. We found out some months ago that the Swedes had obliged the Portugese to impose restrictions on exports f to Sweden of man- made fibre blankets. The British producers have been clamouring for similar protection, but fortunately they have not yet discovered what the Swodes have done.
3. I make these points because I imagine that our colleagues in CRE and elsewhere would not be very happy if we in this Division were to demand the imposition of restrictions on imports of blankets and shirts from Portugal.
