Production of apparel fabrics made wholly or principally of

wool declined from 280 m.lin.yds. in 1961 to an estimated

240 m.lin.yds. in 1968, based on Jan. Sept. 1968. Most of

the decline has been in woollen fabrics. Production figures

for woollen and worsted type apparel fabrics made wholly or

principally of man-made fibres are not available, but the

experience of other developed countries suggests that the

growth in recent years must have been considerable.

Production of knitted cloth, for which figures are

available only in index form, increased from 100 in 1961 to

235 in 1966 and 284 in 1968. Information published by the

Textile Organon on the amount of fibre consumed in making

various itens of knitted apparel, suggests that production

in this section of the industry has been expanding much more

rapidly thanproduction of woven apparel, as the following

figures show:-
