Production of apparel fabrics made wholly or principally of
wool declined from 280 m.lin.yds. in 1961 to an estimated
240 m.lin.yds. in 1968, based on Jan. Sept. 1968. Most of
the decline has been in woollen fabrics. Production figures
for woollen and worsted type apparel fabrics made wholly or
principally of man-made fibres are not available, but the
experience of other developed countries suggests that the
growth in recent years must have been considerable.

Production of knitted cloth, for which figures are
available only in index form, increased from 100 in 1961 to
235 in 1966 and 284 in 1968. Information published by the
Textile Organon on the amount of fibre consumed in making
various itens of knitted apparel, suggests that production
in this section of the industry has been expanding much more
rapidly thanproduction of woven apparel, as the following
figures show:-
