Dear Bunny,
Thank you for your letter of 17 April about Mr. Stans and Textiles. It reached me only at the end of last week but anyway I spent the whole week negotiating at weary length with the Swedes. We shall of course be reporting at length but, briefly, we reached various provisional understandings but concluded nothing. We shall have to conclude something in June ( ? Jordan's third trip to Stockholm).
We are grateful to you for arranging that David Sellers should be in on the discussions with Stans & Co. This helps us with our advisers here, who would have thought it strange if he had not been allowed to be present.
I think that one of the most important points in our Tel.296, (4)
to which you referred, is our statement that we agreed broadly with UKMIS Geneva Tel. 13. This was of course drafted by Derek Jones but
was,
I understand, seen by Sir Eugene before it was sent.
We shall now wait and see what is the outcome of Mr. Stans' Far Eastern trip but clearly there could come a point at which it would be better to have Derek's (b) because the alternative would be (e) only we'll never know, till the last moment (if at all) whether the Administration really would support or accept (e).
I hope you'll excuse us if you find us failing to maintain our customary standards (whatever they may be) this summer.
Our commercial relations' staffing position at the higher levels works like this :
Director
Deputy Director
on leave present
I do both
Assistant Director (Europe)
