Meeting between Stans, Jolles and Weitnauer/

Swiss gained favourable impression of US party. US did not envisage delib- erate breach of GATT but Swiss warned that "if once principle of non- discrimination were breached they would find it difficult to resist other pro- tectionist pressures" "Moreover any proposal to discriminate against Taiwan and Korea would amount to

"negative preference" against Idc's (US appeared to count Hong Kong in withis Japan as "developed countries") US made clear that they do not intend to "roll back" present level of textile imports; their fear was that massive increase of recent past would continue if not checked. No suggestion of Article XIX criteria being relaxed.
