b. Although/not yet got details of the Commission's reaction to which Mr. Dunnett refers in his covering note, I think we could safely assume, given EEC trade policies, that their motives are not likely to le ad them to the liberalisation that would be one of our aims and one is therefore again left with the Americans, whom we are trying to steer away from broad protectionist policies as well as the perhaps narrow ones that might be represented by an extension of the LTA to non-cotton textiles. With the gradual process of the Working Party and its statistical sub group, we should be able to go some way to smoking the Americans out into the open and in three months time will know more clearly how their bilateral appra ches have fared.
