International Policy on Textiles

We gather that Japan is likely to oppose

>

moves which will probably be made by the United States

and E.E.C. at next month's Cotton Textiles Committee

to prolong the Long Term Arrangement for Cotton

Textiles for a further period.

The U.K. too is unenthusiastic about the

prospect of continuing the present arrangements.

The developing countries,on the other hand, wili ΠΟ

doubt attack the way in which the Arrangement has

been operated; but given that the majority of

developed countries are clearly not prepared to

liberalise cotton textiles next autumn (and the

developing countries would not be in a position to

retaliate against say the United States if she

continued controls, in contravention of the GATT,

after the L.T.A.
