International Policy on Textiles
We gather that Japan is likely to oppose

moves which will probably be made by the United States
and E.E.C. at next month's Cotton Textiles Committee
to prolong the Long Term Arrangement for Cotton
Textiles for a further period.
The U.K. too is unenthusiastic about the
prospect of continuing the present arrangements.
The developing countries,on the other hand, wili ΠΟ
doubt attack the way in which the Arrangement has
been operated; but given that the majority of
developed countries are clearly not prepared to
liberalise cotton textiles next autumn (and the
developing countries would not be in a position to
retaliate against say the United States if she
continued controls, in contravention of the GATT,
after the L.T.A.
