TCONFIDENTIAL
Mr. S. Martin
At the meeting of the Royal Visits Committee
today:-
(i) I undertook to write to Sir M. Adeane
letting him know of the probable
requirements for a member of the Royal
Family to attend the Mauritius independence
celebrations in February and Swaziland
کرینگے
possibly in September. lle said that he
would prefer that, at this stage, we
ourselves should not suggest any names.
(ii) Sir M. Aucane revealed that there was an
idea that the Queen might visit Western
Canada with the Duke of Edinburgh in the spring of next year before the Duke himself
goes off to the Commonwealth Study
Conference in Australia, Nothing, however,
would be settled until Mr. Lester Pearson
came to London next month,
(iii) It was not felt that the Duke of Edinburgh
could conveniently fit in a visit to Hong
Kong if he kept to his present schedule of
flying from Mexico City to the Galapagos
Islands and then straight on to Brazil,
Chile, etc. In any case some doubt was
expressed whether he would be the right
person to open the Plover Cove
scheme,
since he was so close to the throne.
Possibly another member of the Royal Family
might be considered. It was agreed that
in any case no decision could be taken for
some months, when an assessment of the
Chinese position would be needed.
