Dormant Commission
12.
The Governor referred to the dormant
commission drawn up some time ago under which he
had to hand over to the Commander British Forces
and leave the Colony himself if it seemed likely
that there would be a prolonged period of armed
hostilities. He said that in those circumstances
he would have no intention of leaving the Colony.
He had written to the Commonwealth Office about
this.
Defence Contribution
13.
It was explained that there should be
no difficulty over the legislature voting the
necessary funds for the increased defence
contribution. The proposal had been put forward
by the Unofficials themselves and the additional
expenditure had been accommodated in the estimates
without cuts elsewhere and without the imposition
of new taxes.
The Budget
14.
The Financial Secretary said that the
budget envisaged further expansion of social
services without significant increases in taxation.
