WELFARE

32. DRINKING WATER. An adequate supply of drinking water from either a public main or a source approved in writing by a health officer must be provided and maintained at suitable points conveniently accessible to all persons employed.

33. WASHING FACILITIES. Sufficient and suitable washing facilities, separate for each sex, must be provided.

34 FIRST AID. An adequate supply of first aid equipment on a scale cmensurate with the number of persons employed must be provided and maintained together with simple instructions for the use of this equipment.

EMPLOYMENT OF WOMEN.

YOUNG PERSONS, AND CHILDREN

35. EMPLOYMENT. Any woman, young person or child who works in an industrial process in an industrial undertaking, whether for wages or not, is deemed to be employed in the undertaking and is therefore subject to the regulations governing the employment of women, young persons and children summarised in paragraphs 36 to 51 below.

36. CHILDREN. No child under the age of 14 years by European reckoning must be employed in any industrial undertaking or dangerous trade.

37. UNDERGROUND WORK IN MINES. No woman or young person must be employed on underground work in any mine.

38. LIFTING OF EXCESSIVE WEIGHTS. No woman or young person must carry any load in an industrial undertaking so heavy as to be likely to cause injury. Young persons under 16 years of age must not carry loads in excess of 30 catties.

39. CLEANING OF MACHINERY. No woman or young person must clean (a) any transmission machinery which is in motion or (b) any dangerous part of any machine while the machine is in motion.

* 40. DANGEROUS TRADES. No woman or young person other than a boy of 16 years of age or over must be employed without the written permission of the Commissioner on boiler chipping, fireworks manufacture, glass working, vermilion manufacture, chromium plating, the manufacture of hydrochloric, nitric, or sulphuric acid, or any process involving the use of arsenic, lead, magnesium, or aluminium or articles wholly or partly made of these substances.

41. FACILITIES FOR SITTING. Suitable facilities for sitting must be provided for the use of all women and young persons whose work is done standing to enable them to take advantage of any opportunities for resting which may occur in the course of employment.
