Church House,

July, 1967.

I am replying to your letter of 14 June to George Thomson about the textile and garment workers in Hong Kong.

Since Mr. Greenhalgh sent you a copy of his letter of

23 May to the Governor of Hong Kong I have answered Questions

on this subject in the House. You may recall that I said on 27 June I was discussing with the Governor legislation providing for a phased reduction in the hours of work to 48

for women and young persons employed in industry over a specific period, with adjustments to permissible overtime.

Subsequent to that Mr. Greenhalgh wrote to me as follows:-

"May I say how pleased I am to read of the proposed changes in working hours for women and young persons in industrial employment in Hong Kong. Your statement in reply to questions in the House on June 27th 1967 was such a big improvement upon your communication to me on 26 April, 1967, when you stated that the amending legislation in Hong Kong would not be extended to apply to those employed in the garment industry.

In conclusion I should, perhaps, add that I understand

that Mr. Greenhalgh has now had a full reply from the Acting

DAME IRENE WARD, DBE, MP.
