Resolutely Repel
Repel the Provocations
by the British Imperialists
-People's Daily Editorial, June 3, 1967
(In our last issue, we published the highlights of the People's Daily's editorial on June 3. Today we are able to make available to our readers a translation of it in full. The importance of this editorial was indicated by the fact that it was published under a title running across the top of the paper's front page. At the mass rally in Canton, the editorial was referred to as 'the call issued by the People's Daily on behalf of Chairman Mao and the Party Central Committee to oppose British imperialism and resist fascist violence.”)
A great fight against bloody persecution by British imperialism has broken out in Hong kong. Despite armed suppression by the Bri- tish military police, our patriotic compatriots in Hongkong have streamed into the streets since the beginning of May, holding in their hands copies of 'Quotations from Chairman
Mao Tse-tung'. In many industries and trades workers have gone on strike or staged work stoppages. Wave upon wave, unafraid of sacri- fices, they fought courageous fights against the British military police and thugs. The vigorous, large-scale anti-imperialist mass movement is developing with force and
Struggle Committee
Warns HK Authorities
The Hongkong and Kowloon Struggle Committee denounced in angry terms the atro- cities committed by the British Hongkong au- thorities against workers in PWD workshops in Sungwongtoi Road, at China Gas Co. plant in Tokwawan and at various other places and pointed out that the escalation of atrocious sup- pression was a hysterical act of provocation against workers and compatriots of all walks of life in Hongkong and another new act of provocation against the 700 million people of China.
The Struggle Committee also decided to ap- propriate HK$2m out of the Struggle Fund and put the sum at the disposal of the Work- ers' Struggle Committee in support of the anti- persecution struggle waged by the latter.
In a statement issued on June 8, the Strug gle Committee recapitulated suppressive mea- sures taken by the police on the same day as follows:
'Today, the British Hongkong authorities Jet out its 'riot police' in large groups to un- fold a huge bloody and atrocious wave of sup- pression against our patriotic workers at various public service enterprises such as Taikoo Dock yard, the Hongkong Electric Co. plant, the Waterworks and its Kowloon branch, Kowloon Godowns, the Star Ferry piers, PWD work. shops and the China Gas Co. plant in Tok-
wawan.
'Especially serious was what happened at the PWD workshops and China Gas Co. plant
in Tokwawan. There the 'riot police' sprang surprise attacks on workers inside their respec- tive plants. The attackers used at first tear gas, wooden missiles and a noxious chemical liquid. Then, with batons and gun butts, they beat up workers overpowered by gas and in- jured scores of them. Over 500 hundred worker were arrested arbitrarily.'

As the saying goes, you can lead a horse (a bull in a similar Cantonese proverb) to the water, but you cannot make it drink. Parti- in question chooses to behave like a stubborn cularly, of course, when the horse, or the bull, and stupid ass, rather dying of thirst than lowering its head.
The behaviour of the Hongkong British au- thorities in past few weeks confirms once again one of Chairman Mao's theses: "The imperialists and domestic reactionaries will certainly not take their defeat lying down and they will struggle to the last ditch.'
To reassure themselves in this struggle to the last ditch, they try on all occasions to see themselves in a magnifying mirror and look at the people, their opponents, through the wrong end of a telescope. Being in possession

Disregarding the repeated warnings by the Chinese Government, the British authorities in Hongkong have not only refused to lower their heads and admit their crimes in perpetrating fascist atrocities, but they have redoubled their (Continued on page 2)

'Don't let your vicious acts... go into your heads and think that peace will prevail from now on. There will be nothing of the sort. Chairman Mao, our great leader, has taught us: "This army has an indomitable spirit and is determined to vanquish all enemies and never to yield.'... To tell you the truth, we, workers and patriotic compatriots in Hong- kong and Kowloon, have acquired all the rights to hit back at you. We are determined to carry the anti-persecution struggle through to the end.'

them.
For their own good, they would do better that, contrary to what they believe, it is the to realise that weapons can change hands and
