Sir,

LETTERS TO THE

TO THE EDITOR

'Contribution' to

Struggle Fund

I work for the American-owned Hilton Hotel. Anger raged in myself when I saw Chinese policemen beat up patriotic compa. triots on May 22. Yet the management of Hilton Hotel saw fit to supply tea and refresh ment to the police. They covered up all the doors and windows to prevent us from wit- nessing the atrocities. They further paid so- called extra allowance to us in their bid to win

us over.

The $50 enclosed herewith, the 'distur- bance allowance' given us by the Hilton, re- present a token of my support to patriotic work ers. I will do my best to lend support to the anti-persecution struggle, and in the meantime I hope patriotic workers of the Hilton Hotel will do the same.

Sure Defeat

Sir,

The Hongkong British authorities have lost the first round; they are bound to be defeated in the second round. I am almost fifty years old, and have never seen businessmen dare to fight imperialists as they are doing today. I am enclosing $10,000 which please forward to the Struggle Funds.

The Governor proclaimed that he wanted peace and order and his much advertised porters and their clubs and associations with detailed enumeration of their members duti- fully echoed him.

Sir,

It is my understanding that the primary function of government is the keeping of peace and order and it seems odd therefore that the government should be obliged to ad- vertise its duties and supports. It reminds me of the advertisement in the local Chinese papers of a herbalist proclaiming his ability to cure sicknesses with pictures of his many patients

and their testimonies.

I happen to know one of the associations in the list of published government supporters. It has about 1,000 members, all university graduates; but according to the rank and file of its membership it is either half dead or half alive (see its May newsletter) and it had to postpone its last annual general meeting for lack of a required very small quorum.

We having been subjected to enslavement education for a long time, we used to encertain many illusions about the British imperialists. But the blood of our compatriots has now wash- ed our eyes clear and the batons of the enemy have waken us up from our dreams.

We pledge full support to the Com- mittee of All-Hongkong Students for the Struggle Against Persecution by the Bri- tish Authorities in Hongkong. We swear that we will carry the anti-persecution struggle through to the end.

Sheer Lie

Sir.

We write to refute the shameless lie disseminated by the Hongkong Britch authorities that patriotic schools with-

It is most regretable that Government should find it necessary to follow the example of the herbalist to proclaim its function in the apparent desire to obscure the cause and evade the effect, showing its lack of moral convic-

tion.

No matter how Government may try to twist and distort the cause of the present situa- tion, the fact still remains that people are protecting against oppression and suppression and not against Peace and Order.

Our recurring disturbances are but symptoms of defective internal organ, which if we ob- serve with proper perspective is represented by Government's policy of 'Divide and Rule the Chinese' and in collusion with vested interest 'Divide and Exploit the workers'.

I fully realise that as it is easier to float down with than to swim up against the stream, it is also easier for this letter to go into waste- paper basket than into print. (According to

held pupils' Hongkong Chinese School Certificate Examination entrance cards.

The so-called school certificate exami- nations have no other purpose than turn- ing pupils into bookworms and muddle- heads to serve the masters as slaves. This can never be done. We the under- signed, this summer's graduates, have witnessed the fascist atrocities against our compatriots. We therefore decided on our own account to withdraw from the School Certificate Examination as a protest. The enemy's attempt to slander the patriotic schools will never succeed.

In addition, those among us who are in the habit of smoking have decided as from today to stop smoking cigarettes of British or American brands. We suggest a general boycott against these cigarettes by all patriotic Chinese com- patriots, as part of a general boycott to defeat the enemy.

Three Steps

In response to the call for escalation of the anti-persecution struggle, we have decided to take the following three steps in protest against the fascist atrocities committed by the Hong- kong British authorities:

Sir,

1. Stop reading reactionary newspapers; Stop smoking British and American brands cigarettes;

2.

3.

Stop buying Jockey Club cash sweep

tickets and lotteries issued by the

Hongkong British authorities.

sit for or are taking part in the School Certificate Examinations to withdraw from the said examination and throw away any illusions.

The School Certificate Examination, in addition to being an instrument used to enslave young students, is a system full of irregularities, as shown by the recent disclosure that English composition sub- jects had been known to some students before the examination. I suggest that patriotic students march to the Edu- cation Department, show to W.G. Gregg, 'Director of Education,' your examina. tion entrance cards and tell him why you refused to sit in the examination.

A Warning

Sir,

I am a police constable attached to XX police station. Everyday I go to my friend's house to read your paper and am convinced that I must think of my own future. I cannot continue to serve the British and kill my own compatriots. When the time comes I shall turn my gun and revenge my compatriots.

The brutal beating of compatriots in police stations since May 6 is not to be tolerated. There must be one day when

guns are first fired at our police sta- tion. I must warn the Hongkong Bri- tish authorities: If you do not accept the five-point demand raised by our For- eign Ministry in Peking, we awakened police constables will be among the first to get rid of you.

"I Was Wrong'

Sir,

I was among the police constables who took part in the bloody atrocities at Sanpokong on May 6, My family is. worried; my relatives and friends despise me and refuse to visit us ever since. I did not care at first but the ensuing in- cidents on May 11 and May 22 have been a useful reminder to me. I begun to wonder why should I be one of those demous and kill my compatriots.

Mr. Editor, please tell our compatriots that I know I was wrong and I have decided to redeem my sins. I will join other Chinese policemen having national con- science and am ready to annihilate the fascist masters and their faithful run- ning dogs anytime when the Struggle Committee orders us to do so.
