Promotion to Commissioner of Police

Minister of State is seeing Tyrer at

latter's request in week beginning August 14th.

Minister's intention is to assuage Tyrer's amour-

propre, while of course remaining firm on decision

that his retirement must proceed. Minister's

task will be easier if announcement of Eates'

promotion can be deferred until after he has

seen Tyrer. We will telegraph as soon as inter-

view has taken place. There is also point

that publicity and comment here over Tyrer's

retirement have died away and we think that if

announcement of Eates' promotion can be held

for a little while longer that will diminish

risk of stirring up interest in this again.
