Simultaneously the unit has endeavoured to increase the frequency with which Government officers explain their work on radio. By no means all the success in this field can be claimed by the unit. To a large extent the radio stations themselves are more actively seekin these interviews and on their own initiative some government officers are becoming more ready to help. But the publicity committee and the unit together can claim much of the credit for a very substantial improvement. The Chinese services of both Radio Hong Kong and Commercial Radio cich carried interviews with about 140-150 government officers during the month of October alone, Almost every one of thesc was of course a Chinese or Chinese-speaking officer and in only 2 or 3 cases did the stations have to use the technique of over-laying the official's voice with a translation.
Newspaper advertising

:
The first of a series of massive advertising campaigns in the Chinese press run by the unit was to publicise the public a: private organisations pledging their support for the maintenance of law and order. Several departments, including notably the S.C.A. and D.C. & I. were responsible for stimulating their response but momentum was largely maintained and effect achieved by the series of full-page advertisement. appearing day after day in every Chinese newspaper. A secondary advant. of this campaign was that it assisted the non-communist press at a diffe time and helped to secure their fullest support. Other advertising; camp. in the Chinese press have included the display advertisements to notify vacancies in Government schools for pupils of communist schools. Mll pages were taken in Chinese newspapers on the day of the funerals of sir policemen to carry obituaries, photographs and tributes.

Although the communists made monnive use of posters, nowoj used as posters and slogans painted on walls the authorities discouragin retaliation by the special publicity unit on the grounds that it might be to an "escalation". However, the newshects referred to above were designe for dual use as posters and were so used by thu, police. A poster was produced with a general theme of denunciation of trouble-wkers an designed so that specific messages could be added to must particular situations. These have since been used to call for public Information, bombs and to carry the Hon. Colonial Deer Buy 'a word out public sensul and information. Other posters were produs ie situtions.
