students from the school of which the arrested Chairman is head-
master and four K.W.C.K.V.P.C. Committee members assembled outside
and, while chanting the thoughts of MAO, demanded the Chairman's
release. Consequently, the four Committee members were arrested,
charged and convicted, while the Chairman's case was adjourned to the
6th June (when, incidentally, he jumped bail). Since the 12th May,
various left-wing organisations have sent comfort groups to the Walled
City to express sympathy and the Committee has formed a "struggle
committee" in line with other left-wing organisations in the Colony.
On the 15th Lay, the United Nations Association of Hong Kong (U.N.A.H.K.) (claimed membership: 13,000; paid up membership: 3,000)
sent a telegram to Mr. J. Johnson, Member of Parliament for Kingston-
on Hull, West, requesting that efforts be made to send a Trade Union
Congress (T.U.C.) delegation to Hong Kong to investigate the real
cause of the disturbances in Kowloon. The U.N.A.H.K. stressed in
its cable that the "disturbances were not politically inspired but
were due to an economic crisis in the Colony" 9

On the 30th lay, MA Man Fai (7456/2429/6540), Exeucitve
Secretary of the U.N.A.H.K., disclosed that Mrs. Elsie Elliott, on
of the six alternating Chairmen, had tendered her resignation to the
Association on the grounds of pressure of work. Mrs. Elliott is
standing as an independent candidate in the Urban Council Elections
due to be held on 7th June(L.I.C. Internal Intelligence Report for
February, 1967, paragraph 15 refers). (She was in fact elected.)
The third Russian ship for repair by the Hong Kong and
Whampoa Dock Company Limited (L.I.C. Internal Intelligence Report
for April, 1967, paragraph 10 refers) arrived on the 2nd May and
the fourth on the 21st May. Work on the other ships had not yet
finished and there were four ships under repaid at the end of May.
Contracts for the repair of two further ships have been signed but
it is not known when they are expected.
