ENCLOSURE TO COS 1419/7/6/68
Continued)
a small force of five RAF Hunters could be provided for Hong
Kong from 1970 onwards.
21. We further conclude that whilst the aircraft should be
flown by regular pilots of the RAF, the following arrangements
would be effective in limiting costs and in identifying the
squadron as closely as possible with the Colony:
a.
HKAEC to undertake most of the servicing, although
civilian/auxiliary air force tradesmen could undertake
the first line servicing tasks.
b. The HKAAF to be used to assist in carrying out
essential support services by augmenting regular
station staffs, and by taking a larger amd more direct
part in the unit's operation at weekends should the
occasion arise.
C. A title, identifying the unit with the Colony
(such as 209 Squadron or The Hong Kong Air Defence
Force) to be chosen.
22. We finally conclude that Commander FEAF should be
invited to carry out a detailed examination of the proposal
with particular regard to the technical and administrative
posts which could be allocated to the HKAAF.
