Dear Arthur

16/7

139 Thank you for your letter HWB 10/9 of 10th June, 1968 in which you give details of the proposed future strength and structure of the Services here in the early seventies.

You suggest that the most important action for us at the moment is to follow up the possibility of the Hunters being manned and serviced from local resources.

When we recently approached H. Q. British Forces here on this subject we were informed that the Royal Air Force had already undertaken a feasibility study, and that H. Q. Far East Air Force had forwarded certain recommendations to the Ministry of Defence (Air). We were not consulted on this, since the Royal Air Force were making their assessment on a "single- service" basis.

I understand that the report covers aspects of manning, administration and maintenance. The contribution that the Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force can make is considered to be limited. It would not apparently be advisable to train volunteers as Hunter pilots since the amount of time that they could devote to training would be insufficient for them to attain an acceptable level of competence. The H. K. A. A. F. could however make a contribution to the administration and control sections of the Flight.

Sir Arthur Galsworthy, KCMG, Curtis Green Building, Victoria Embankment, LONDON, S. W. 1.
