26,

I am replying to your letter of 29 July about the idea of a new name for the Hong Kong

Police.

could

This matter was, in fact, discussed with the Governor of Hong Kong during his visit to this country in May. It appeared that any advantage which might be gained by the proposed change will not be sufficient to outweigh the disadvantages which would probably result if there were an unfavourable reaction from the Chinese People's Government. Accordingly the conclusion reached was that there should be

no change.

I suggest that Lieutenant Commander Lynch Maydon be told that the matter was discussed with the Governor of Hong Kong during his visit to this country in May; that all the arguments

for and against the proposed change of name were examined, but that the conclusion reached was that the status quo should be maintained.
