Macao.
Hong Kong left-wing press today prints relatively little news about Macao except for minor news items about "demands by residents".
2.
About 700 Portuguese nationals including a large number of women and children, arrived here 16th January and up to mid-day on 17th January. Many brought heavy baggage, and they appeared to have made their own arrangements to leave Macao. They were admitted in accordance with usual immigration procedures and granted seven days stay in the first instance.
3. Portuguese Consul-General has told us that he was informed by one of the members of the Portuguese delegation that the attitude of the Chinese authorities at meeting on 16th January was "not so stiff" and the proceedings followed the usual line of argument about the Portuguese draft.
confirm this and say that the Chinese delegation took away the draft to study.
40 Her Majesty's Consul in Macao reports that the atmosphere is fairly relaxed and he has not had an unusual number of applications for visas from Portuguese wishing to travel to Hong Kong. It appears that the Governor has not yet taken any decision to put evacuation in hand: English language paper today suggests that he may have actively discouraged Portuguese nationals from making their way here yet.
