Addressed to Commonwealth Office telegram No. 106 of
24 January.
Repeated for information to Singapore and Peking.
Incidents on 23 January
At 1100 twenty people protested outside Central Police Station about the arrest of three men in Western District on 19 January. They refused to disperse or to go to the neighbouring remand centre to visit the men; became hostile and began to chant. As a result
6 men and 1 woman were arrested. In the afternoon two men representing workers in the printing trade went to Colony Police Headquarters to protest against the arrest at Western and Central. Their attitude was apologetic and they reiterated that they were acting on the instructions of their Unions. There has also been another unruly delgation, 30 strong, to the Labour Department, they forced their way into the building and remained for some time until dispersing, with threats to return in greater strength. They refused to be interviewed in small groups.
Foreign Office please pass Peking as my telegram No. 32.
