both the Governor and his second-in-command

were to leave the Colony within a few

weeks of each other.

Although Sir David Trench's

commission does not expire until next

Spring, there is already considerable local pressure within the Colony for

his term of office to be extended. In

view of this I think we should announce

very soon whether or not we are going to

extend Sir David's term. For the

reasons given in this minute I very

much hope you will agree that we may

offer him an extension of one year,

subject to his continuing physical

fitness and a medical examination.

5. I am sending a copy of this minute

to the Foreign Secretary.
