both the Governor and his second-in-command
were to leave the Colony within a few
weeks of each other.
4.
Although Sir David Trench's
commission does not expire until next
Spring, there is already considerable local pressure within the Colony for
his term of office to be extended. In
view of this I think we should announce
very soon whether or not we are going to
extend Sir David's term. For the
reasons given in this minute I very
much hope you will agree that we may
offer him an extension of one year,
subject to his continuing physical
fitness and a medical examination.
5. I am sending a copy of this minute
to the Foreign Secretary.
