However, the Secretary of Stato may if questioned on the subject, wish

to give the following information, in confidence, to the Canadian

Prime Minister. Three neetings have taken place on the frontier (on

1st, 3rd and 14th November) with local Chinese border officials, with a

view to settling various border issues (including the return of the

abducted Hong Kong police personnel). Agreement was reached at the

scoond meeting on a number of the matters involved but before this

egroomont could be implemented the Chinese border authorities asked for

a further meeting to discuss certain unspecified points which they alleged to

to be outstanding from the previous meetings. A further meeting was

accordingly held on 14th November and is to be followed by yet another

meeting today (15th November).

All the meetings have taken place in a relatively friendly

atmosphere.
